Sponsor Spotlight: Protecting Your Designs and Data with RAID Technology

Designing and developing products is a time consuming and arduous task – taking thousands, if not tens of thousands, of man hours to complete. Any loss of data can mean the difference between getting a product out the door and spending weeks rebuilding the work you’d previously done.

RAID technology helps you protect your workstation against data loss by improving backup redundancy, while at the same time speeding data retrieval. A RAID – or redundant arrays of independent disks – is designed to use two or more hard disks at the same time. By capturing and storing data in multiple places on your workstation, you can cost effectively improve data reliability and increase data protection.

The HP Z Workstations family of systems supports different levels of RAID functionality using SATA and SAS hardware and controllers1. These different levels deliver the right amount of protection to match the complexity of your work and support requirements.

For example, with “striping,” data is split apart and stored on more than one physical disk, which helps improve your workstation’s read/write performance and provides additional storage space. With “mirroring,” data is copied to more than one physical disk, which builds in file redundancy and allows you to recover your data even if one disk fails. And “parity” is an error correction feature that offers a form of fault tolerance by allowing you to reconstruct data that has failed on a drive.

1 SATA hardware RAID is not supported on Linux systems. The Linux kernel, with built-in software RAID, provides excellent functionality and performance. It is a good alternative to hardware-based RAID. Please visit http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00060684/c00060684.pdf for RAID capabilities with Linux.
